The AS/NZ 3000:2018 sets out the requirements for the design, construction and verifications of electrical installations. These requirements are intended to protect persons, livestock, and property from electric shock, fire, and physical injury hazards that may arise from an electrical installation.

There have been over 200 changes to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules revision since the last update in 2007. Below are some highlights from the new Wiring Rules.

1. Emphasis on Safety

Working with wires, particularly live wires can have a range of safety risks. Complying with AS/NZS 3000 - Wiring Rules ensures hazards and possible dangers are significantly reduced. For example, the new AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules have improved safety requirements for cooking appliance switching devices.

2. Changes to Technology

Since the previous edition of the Wiring Rules, there have been numerous technological advancements. For example, developments in electric vehicle technology have necessitated additions to the Standard, such as the inclusion of information on electric vehicle socket outlets and installation in the 2018 edition of the Wiring Rules.

3. Improved Installation

The new Wiring Rules have updated installation safety requirements for cables passing through bulk thermal insulation. The rules also feature a reorganized safety service section with topic-specific information.

4. Mandatory Requirements for Electrical Equipment

The new Wiring Rules include several mandatory changes, such as:

  • Mandatory RCD protection for all final sub-circuits in residential alterations and repairs, with clarification on RCD requirements.
  • A new requirement to indicate the date of initial energization on the installation switchboard.

5. Enhanced Requirements for Electrical Repairs

Electrical installation repairs are a key source of work for electricians and electrical contractors. Unsurprisingly, the newest edition clarifies and expands the requirements for alterations and repairs. Furthermore, it revises the requirements for lighting equipment and accessories.
