These changes come through Amendment 14 of Acceptable Solution G12/AS1 (Water Supplies), which became effective on 2 November 2024. The amendment reduces the allowable lead content in products that come into contact with drinking water.

What is changing?

Amendment 14 introduces a low-lead requirement for copper-alloy products used in potable water systems. This applies to a wide range of plumbing components used in both residential and commercial installations.

Do existing installations need to be replaced?

No. Existing installations do not need to be upgraded, provided they are not being modified and are not considered unsafe.

Building consent. What are the key dates to be aware of?

  • Up to 1 May 2026: Both Amendment 13 and Amendment 14 can be used to demonstrate compliance.
  • From 2 May 2026 onward: Amendment 14 becomes the only Acceptable Solution.
  • Projects with building consent before 2 May 2026: Can be completed under the previous rules.
  • Projects without building consent: Any work continuing after 2 May 2026 must comply with the new low-lead requirements.

Which products are affected?

  • Copper alloy fittings
  • Stainless steel braided hoses
  • Valves
  • Taps and mixers
  • Water meters
  • Pumps
  • Water heaters
  • Residential water filtration systems
  • Water dispensers
  • Fire sprinkler systems connected to potable water supplies

How do you identify lead-free products?

  • Check product information for compliance with G12/AS1.
  • Look for recognised certification marks.
  • Request NSF/ANSI/CAN 372:2020 test reports confirming ≤0.25% lead content.

What are the next steps?

  • Start specifying compliant low-lead products.
  • Review projects against the 2 May 2026 deadline.
  • Request compliance documentation from suppliers.
