For over 40 years, the spool design has remained unchanged, primarily constructed from plastic, with most industry spools being recyclable. However, due to the absence of recycling facilities and inadequate recycling practices, they often end up in landfill. This not only depletes valuable natural resources but also imposes a significant environmental impact.

In a move away from the unsustainable use of single-use spools, Nexans introduced MOBIWAY BOOST – a returnable and reusable solution, leading to a significant decrease in energy consumption. Collaboration sparked innovation: Nexans DISTINGO™ & MOBIWAY BOOST.  Designed with electricians in mind. 

The global construction industry continues to evolve, making it important for manufacturers to understand the needs of each local market. Nexans addressed this by regularly engaging with industry professionals through focus groups and persona research. Through this work, Nexans identified key challenges electricians faced—mainly around efficiency, accuracy, and safety. These insights led to the creation of Nexans DISTINGO™, a simple but smart improvement to electrical cables.

In February 2025, Nexans carried out in‑depth research across New Zealand, interviewing licensed electricians from both commercial and residential sectors. Their feedback proved invaluable and directly shaped the design of DISTINGO™, ensuring the new cable features solved real, everyday problems on the job.

Electricians highlighted two major frustrations:

• Finding the active core quickly—many contractors prefer to align their cables with the active core facing the same direction. DISTINGO™ makes the active core instantly identifiable. 
• Telling 4mm² and 6mm² cables apart—a frequent source of mistakes. DISTINGO™ addresses this with a clear visual stripe that was far easier to see, especially in tight or low‑light spaces.

Since printed markings could fade over time, DISTINGO™ provides a permanent, highly visible reference that would not wear off. This collaborative approach demonstrates Nexans’ commitment to innovation and customer‑driven design. When paired with the MOBIWAY BOOST spool system, DISTINGO™ delivers a smarter, more efficient way of working—reinforcing Nexans’ reputation as a trusted innovation partner in the electrical industry.
